Who we are
Frenchtown CERT was formed in January 2011 as a volunteer team of the Frenchtown Fire Department. We primarily serve Frenchtown Township and Monroe County, and are an available resource for the region.
Our members are trained volunteers ages 18 and up from a wide variety of backgrounds. Each completes a 20-hour CERT Basic Training and keeps building on it year round. Together we log about 1,000 hours of service each year, with event coverage and call-out response 24/7 and a 45-minute response goal.
What we do
- Rehab for first responders: nourishment, hydration, and shelter from the weather
- First aid, CPR, and triage support
- Search and rescue, including missing person searches
- Traffic management and crowd control
- Weather spotting and radio communications
- Flood support and disaster mitigation
- Drone operations
- Support for fire and police personnel
- Free community classes on disaster preparedness and response
About the CERT program
The Community Emergency Response Team concept was started by the Los Angeles Fire Department in 1985 and expanded nationally by FEMA. After a major disaster, first responders can’t reach everyone right away, and neighbors end up helping each other. CERT training teaches people to do that safely: put out small fires, treat the “3 killers” (airway obstruction, severe bleeding, and shock), search for and rescue victims, and organize volunteers to do the greatest good for the greatest number.
CERT teams operate in every state. To learn more about the national program or find a team near you, visit Ready.gov/cert.
